About the artist:
Painter and sculptor Benjamin Levy was a unique figure in the landscape of Israeli art. His semi surrealistic naive style was seen as unusual. As an outsider artist, he insisted on maintaining his special style: telling tales, dreaming dreams and humorously describing Oriental figures.
Benjamin Levy was born in 1940 in Kerem Hateimanim in Tel Aviv. His artistic talent was apparent already as a child at the Tokayer boarding school. During high school in Haifa he studied Zincography as well as painting with Avraham Yaskil and Zvi Meirovitch. In 1959 he moved to Paris and studied drawing at Ecole de Paris. In 1962 he married the musician Hanna Vroman. In 1965 they moved to N.Y., where Levy studied etchings at Pratt Institute, and won some awards. Levy painted in oil, watercolor and gouache and created drawings, prints and sculptures. He held over 120 one-person exhibitions and participated in hundreds of group exhibitions worldwide. His works, including monumental sculptures, are found in many collections. He shared his time between N.Y., Tel Aviv and Ein Hod, where Levy painted until his death in 2022.
Levy's inclusion of animals in his works was also inspired by memories from his home in Kerem Hateimanim, where his family and these animals lived side by side as one family. Until today, animals continue to be a part of his home in Ein Hod.
